The Indian cricket team for the Asia Cup 2025 is set to be selected on August 19 in Mumbai, as reported by the Times Of India. The article also mentioned that India’s T20 captain, Suryakumar Yadav, will travel from Bengaluru to Mumbai to participate in the selection meeting. Currently, Suryakumar is at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, undergoing rehabilitation after undergoing surgery for a sports hernia. He has begun batting in the nets, which suggests that he will continue as captain for the Asia Cup.
“Indeed, the team for the Asia Cup will be finalized on August 19 in Mumbai. Following the selection committee meeting, there will be a press conference led by chief selector and former Indian pacer Ajit Agarkar,” a source from BCCI stated.
Reports indicate that Shubman Gill is likely to be named vice-captain; however, a BCCI source mentioned that he might struggle to secure a spot on the team. The report also suggested that Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal could be left out, with selectors reportedly advising the young opener to focus on Test cricket.
“In fact, with India aiming to stick with the opening duo of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, Gill is currently facing challenges in making the team. Even Yashasvi Jaiswal, who performed well in the recent series in England, along with middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer, are unlikely to be selected for the T20 squad. Jaiswal has been instructed by the selectors to concentrate on red-ball cricket,” a source disclosed.
Captain Suryakumar Yadav has accumulated 1,107 runs in T20 matches at an average of 36.90, boasting a strike rate of 161.13 and eight fifties, with his highest score being 75 since the T20 World Cup victory. However, his form on the international stage has seen a significant decline.
Since the T20 World Cup last year, Gill has amassed 893 runs in 22 matches at an average of 47.00, with a strike rate exceeding 147 and eight fifties, his best score being 93*.
Thus, with Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Tilak Varma in the mix, along with captain Suryakumar, the top order is too congested for Gill to find a place.
Like Gill, Jaiswal too played his last T20I in July 2024, with India utilising his Test abilities during the home season and away assignments in Australia and England, where he scored 391 and 411 runs respectively in a series.
