Indian Railways is preparing to adopt a baggage weight checking system similar to airports at key stations, beginning shortly. Passengers will have their luggage weighed using electronic scales, and strict limits will be enforced according to the travel class. For instance, AC First Class travelers can carry up to 70 kg, AC Two Tier up to 50 kg, AC Three Tier and Sleeper Class travelers up to 40 kg, and General Class up to 35 kg.

Extra charges or fines will apply to luggage that exceeds these weight limits or for bags of unconventional size that cause inconvenience, even if within the weight allowance. The new policy will first be implemented at major stations in the northern and north-central regions, such as Prayagraj, Kanpur Central, Mirzapur, and others.

This change is designed to improve passenger convenience and safety by reducing overcrowding inside trains and modernizing station facilities with an airport-like environment. Alongside baggage rules, Indian Railways also plans to set up branded retail outlets at redeveloped stations to enhance the travel experience and generate additional revenue.

According to Himanshu Shukla, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of Prayagraj, the initiative aims to make train journeys more efficient and comfortable, especially for long-distance travelers.
