A wave of youth-led protests, dubbed the “Gen Z fury,” has brought Nepal to a standstill, forcing the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. The demonstrations, which began over a government ban on social media platforms, rapidly escalated into widespread violence fueled by public anger over political corruption and the lavish lifestyles of the ruling elite.
The consequences have been dire. At least 19 people have died in clashes, and protesters have torched key government buildings, including the parliament and the main administrative complex, Singha Durbar. The Prime Minister’s residence and offices of the ruling party have also been set ablaze.
In response to the escalating crisis, the Nepal Army has taken control of security, deploying personnel and securing the Kathmandu airport. The turmoil has severely impacted travel, with major airlines cancelling flights and the Nepal-Uttar Pradesh border seeing a significant decrease in activity. International concern is mounting, with both India and Israel issuing travel advisories and urging their citizens to avoid the troubled nation. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also appealed for peace and stability, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
