Modi will travel to Tokyo from August 29–30 for the 15th India–Japan Annual Summit at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. This will mark his eighth visit to Japan and his first bilateral summit with Prime Minister Ishiba. The leaders are expected to review the progress of the Special Strategic and Global Partnership, with wide-ranging discussions on defence and security cooperation, trade and investment, technology collaboration, innovation, and cultural exchanges. Regional and global developments will also figure prominently in their talks.

In the second leg of the tour, the Prime Minister will visit Tianjin, China, on August 31–September 1 to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, at the invitation of President Xi Jinping. On the sidelines of the summit, he is likely to hold bilateral meetings with several counterparts. India has been a full member of the SCO since 2017 and hosted the grouping’s presidency in 2022–23.
