The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light to India’s bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games (CWG). The approval includes clearance for signing the Host Collaboration Agreement (HCA) as well as guarantees from the relevant ministries, departments, and agencies. Financial grant-in-aid support to the Gujarat government has also been sanctioned should India’s bid be successful.
Ahmedabad has been identified as the proposed host city, with the Narendra Modi Stadium—the world’s largest cricket arena and the venue of the 2023 ICC World Cup Final—expected to be a centrepiece. A Commonwealth Sport inspection team, led by Games Director Darren Hall, recently visited the city to review venues and meet state officials. A larger delegation is scheduled to visit soon.
In its statement, the Cabinet emphasised that hosting the CWG would deliver benefits well beyond sport—boosting tourism, creating new jobs, and opening up growth avenues in sectors like sports science, event management, logistics, broadcasting, IT, communication, and public relations. “The Games will inspire millions of young athletes and leave a lasting legacy for Indian sport and society,” it said.
Alongside India, Nigeria and two other countries have shown interest in staging the 2030 edition. The final decision will be taken at the General Assembly of Commonwealth Sport, scheduled to be held in Glasgow in November.
India last hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010 in New Delhi.
